Seven manuscript volumes of Memoranda, Minutes and Treasurer's Notes together with a pair of unrecorded printed music catalogues for the West Town Glee Club near Dewsbury in the old West Riding of Yorkshire - contained within an old leather music satchel. Together the collection records the social and musical activities of a thriving amateur, all-male singing group rehearsing and performing in a thriving northern mill town then at the peak of its industrial prosperity. This archive starts in 1859, a year after the Club's formation, and concludes in 1894. Printed items:

1. Rules and Catalogue of Music Belonging to the West Town Glee Club, Revised 1875, Printed by George Harper, Dewsbury, printed blue wrappers, upper cover detached, dog-earred pp16. Ownership signature of 'J Howgale, C J Crabtree Hon. Sec.' Printed list of officers, annotated, club rules and rehearsal rules: 'the meetings of the Club shall be held at the Gate In, Fall Lane... every Thursday evening from eight until ten o'clock'. Ten page 'Catalogue of Music printed in columns for title, number of volumes, format and composer including Parry, Weber, Pinsuti, Spofforth, Paxton, Callcott, Barnby etc.

The manuscript volumes are in a variety of contemporary bindings, all in quarto format, only one with the boards detached but generally soiled and worn:

West Town Glee Club Nr Dewsbury, 1861, lists of participating members with register of attendance over weekly rehearsals; accounts from 1859 to final leaves.

West Town Glee Club, Memorandum Book & Minute Book, 1874-1879, pp100,

Committee Meetings, 1875-1881, pp 100 'that H[enr]y Boothroyd be elected Librarian for the following year (carried).'

West Town Glee Club 1881-1885, pp 70

Committee Meetings, 1885-1894. Minuted thus: 'Pro[posed] by W White Sec, by C Jolson, that the best attendance of the Vocal members including pianist of the West Town Glee Club go to the Licensed Victuallers dinner on Nov 19/ 91. Carried.'

West Town Glee Club Minute Book 1879-1886, pp 100, 'that the fines [for non-attendance] be 1/2 up to 9 o'clock and 1 penny after nine to ten (Carried). Appointment of printer, decision about 'Club cards' etc.
