pp 46 Withdrawn before publication, one of the rarest of Hogarth Press imprints. Accompanying the book is a typed letter from the Hogarth Press dated May 24th, 1927 and addressed 'To the Literary Editor' of the short-lived journal The Calendar of Modern Letters which explains that the volume 'has been withdrawn from publication and we shall be greatly obliged if you will see that no notice or review of it appears in your paper.' Letter signed in purple ink by the Secretary of the press. Old folds to the letter. The orange wraps of the book have dried out and are very fragile; the upper cover is detached from the book and there are several chips to the card along the spine fold. The text is unmarked. Before publication Phibbs was warned that the anti-Catholic tone of some of his poems might cost him his job as a Carnegie librarian. Consequently Phibbs persuaded Leonard Woolf to suppress the book at the last minute. The press's bibliographer J Howard Woolmer notes of the imprint, 'Publication date and number of copies printed not known': presumably all but the review copies and a handful of authorial presentation copies were pulped.
