An early edition of W Riley's almost forgotten classic Yorkshire novel, Windyridge, together with an album of original postcard sized photographs from the early 1920s showing the locations in and around the village of Hawksworth that inspired Riley to write his best-selling novel while still holding down his day job as Managing Director of Riley Brothers Optical Lantern Company in Bradford. The oblong photo album contains 24 annotated photographs, each of which illustrates a line quoted below from the book. So, 'I chanced upon this hamlet, and my Inner Self peremptorily bade my take up my abode here' is illustrated with a sepia photograph looking along the main street in Hawksworth, two cyclists dawdling in the middle distance. A gift inscription inside the front cover reads, 'Mother from Doris Xmas 1922'. Other photographs show countryside, sheep shearing, school children and a row of cottages. The book in in good condition, bound in decorated blue cloth with a split along the cloth of the upper hinge although the binding remains sound. The book is inscribed on the first endpaper 'To May With love and best wishes Irene John'. To the rear the first owner has jotted the names of some of the villages that inspired the novel, thus: 'Marsland - Baildon; Romanton - Ilkley; Airlee - Leeds; Uncle Ned's - Dick Hudsons' etc.
