Censored 1920s edition of the earliest book by an English doctor to describe contraceptive methods.
The book is bound in printed wrappers, no date but OCLC suggests 1920-1929. The censorship of the book specifically targets editorial references to contraception, notably ‘Limitation of Familes’. At page 42 a paragraph on the use of contraceptive pessaries has been pasted over and messily removed with most of the text obscured and the following leaf, pp43-4, removed leaving only a stub. Second leaf of advertisements removed leaving only scissored stub - no doubt removing an advert for pessaries: 2 Plates [2] pp66 [2] adverts. OCLC locates one copy only of this edition at the Wellcome Library.
Dr. Henry Allbutt was a Leeds doctor who helped to organise the Malthusian League aimed at planned population control. Allbutt fell foul of the medical profession for advocating birth control and this publication led to his prosecution by the General Medical Council; in 1887 he was struck off the Medical Register. This censored edition gives a sense of the outrage that greeted its publication.
