INSCRIBED BY WRITER MARTHA GELLHORN TO CHRISTINA FOYLE on the verso of the half-title with a sly (critical or complimentary?) reference to St Louis where Gellhorn was born: ‘For Miss Foyle who feels as I do about my birthplace Respectfully Marty Gellhorn’ - one of Gellhorn’s nicknames.

Near fine book, slight spotting to endpapers and edges of text block in a very good plus jacket, not price-clipped, a little browning to top edge of flaps.

Later a celebrated war reporter, this early work by Gellhorn told the human story of the Great Depression and made her name. According to the Saturday Review of Literature, this book seemed to be ‘woven not out of words but out of the tissues of human beings.’ Three years Gellhorn’s junior Christina Foyle presided over Foyle’s bookshop in London for 70 years and met many leading literary and political figures during her life.
