iv, pp13-392 Lewis Bradford's annotated copy: 'This Book belongs to Lewis Bradford of Plympton, Mass. Cost one dollar. January 29. 1846'. Bound in roan with a red morocco spine label. Upper hinge very tender, foxing throughout the book on the soft paper stock. Bradford has annotated the book quite extensively around a dozen times as well as making several insertions including a broadside and a handwritten table, all in the final decade of his life. Annotations at p.216 with an extract from an 1845 law written on an inserted blue half sheet of paper relating to school funding; two pages of additional notes inserted opposite p302 relating to the Age of Consent; opposite p304 an inserted 'Commonwealth of Massachusetts' broadside relating to 1845 Banns of Marriage Act. Further annotations, pp 369, 380, 371, 383, 390. Inserted at the end of the book a handwritten 'Table, exhibiting the Area of the Several States in Square Miles, [which] was prepared in the Land Office at Washington, and published in 1849'. Bradford divides the table into Free and Slave States, calculating the overall areas - to the advantage of the Slave States. A fascinating copy owned and actively maintained and kept up to date into his final years by Lewis Bradford who was descended from Governor William Bradford, born in Plympton in 1768 and worked as town clerk for forty years. An avid member of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society Bradford died in 1851 at the age of 83.
