Third edition of the most important Tudor teaching guide, written by Elizabeth I's tutor, and bound with Practical Geometry by Charles I's 'Chief engineer of all castles, forts, and fortifications within Wales'. Eighteenth century calf with a single gilt fillet to the boards, red morocco label, spine neatly relaid probably in the nineteenth century; faded red speckled edges. New endpapers inserted; printed shelf-label to first pastedown. The Schole Master collates as per ESTC R217827, the third edition of the work: [6] ff 67 - actually 68. The title page is dated 1571, and the dedicatory epistle signed by Margaret Ascham; the colophon is dated 1573. The title page has old paper repairs at the head of the page with a strip of paper laid down across the top 3cm of the verso of the leaf; slight loss to the outer tip, small triangle of paper missing close to the gutter at the foot of the page, not quite touching the woodcut border. Old stain across upper part of the leaf. The text collates complete, with quite heavy staining to the first four gatherings and a little loss to the tips of the corners of the leaves at the tail of several page, nowhere coming close to text. Occasional old penmanship in the margins relating to an eighteenth century female owner of the book - 'Mary Smith'. Some staining to the final gathering and the colophon which has lost both tips of the page. Woodcut decorations and initials throughout. Practical Geometry collates complete as per the issue printed by Grismon for Boydell, ESTC R217827: [8] pp56 [4] pp 140; heavy soiling to the title page, missing both outer tips of the title leaf and heavy browning to the final leaf. Woodcut illustrations throughout. Ascham's Schole Master emerged from a 1563 debate at Windsor Castle with Sir William Cecil about the effectiveness of corporal punishment. In Book I Ascham deals with education, the court and travel to Italy; in Book II he sets out his pedagogical system. It's particularly interesting to find two didactic works bound together, both by authors with such strong royalist ties to Elizabeth I and Charles I.
