pp 548, Hartwig's Polar World, inscribed by Jane Austen's great nephew to a future lawyer and MP: 'John James Withers from Edw C Austen Leigh (Honoris causa) Eton. Election. 1880'. The book has been bound in polished calf, spine relaid with new label, marbled endpapers; Withers' bookplate on the first pastedown, cracking to internal hinge; binding sound. Austen-Leigh was a tutor at Eton and this book was given to mark his pupil's success in becoming a King's Scholar at the school. Edward Compton Leigh was a grandson of Jane Austen's brother the Reverend James Austen, and the son of her biographer, James Edward Austen-Leigh. Throughout the nineteenth century the Austen-Leighs were assiduous in maintaining the reputation of 'aunt Jane'.
