[frontispiece] pp 144 Rare Regency period collection of 'Enigmas, Charades, Rebusses, Logographs, Anagrams, Conundrums &c. &c.' dated to 1832 in the sole institutional copy at the British Library. Diaper-patterned paper covered boards with a gilt sphinx to the upper cover; yellow coated endpapers. Large folding frontispiece (31x12cm) filled with puns and puzzles, opposite Egyptian themed engraved title page which is only lightly attached at the gutter. Twelve line manuscript conundrum tipped onto lower pastedown. Riddles and word games such as the ones in this book were very popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, playing a crucial role in the relationship between Jane Austen's character Emma Woodhouse and her friend Harriet.
