pp 20 Possibly unrecorded catalogue of a panorama of New York City exhibited in Edinburgh on the Mound in 1836. The twenty page pamphlet is bound in at the end of the 1836 volume of The Visitor, a periodical published by the Religious Tract Society, bound in worn half calf over marbled boards, ownership signature of 'Marion Wallace Portobello April 14th 1837'. The panorama pamphlet has a full title page with a description of the 'Jerusalem' panorama beginning on the verso followed by New York from pages 13-20. It precedes by a year The University of Glasgow's 1837 edition of this work (M W Reid, Edinburgh) and several similar imprints which appeared in the following years in the United States which appear to relate to exhibitions of the same panoramas based on the work of Frederick Catherwood. In the text, a brief introduction to the city of New York's history precedes the description of the three panels of the panorama, the first view being 'taken opposite the city hall, about the middle of Broadway.. bounded by the East River.. the town and wooded heights of Brooklyn... on the west is the Hudson.. with a long line of shipping...' This is followed by views of St Paul's Church, the 'north-end of Broadway' and finally 'Park Row... the Bowery of New York Theatre...' The early nineteenth century saw a vogue for panoramas with several imprints relating to their exhibition in Edinburgh - this one doesn't appear at present to be held in any institutional library.
