An original wooden newspaper hoarding with the Heckmondwike Herald poster from Friday May 24th 1940 still present. The hoarding which was handed down by the family which owned the newspaper over several generations records a series of local events in familiar headline terms. Below the paper's name and the date at the top of the poster, the top story is the 'Spen Valley By Election Latest Developments.' This took place one week later on June 1st 1940 and returned the Liberal William Woolley to Parliament unopposed. Below this is 'Staincliffe Presentation (Picture)' followed by the latest from France: 'More Heckmondwike Soldiers' Experiences' and finally the standby 'Deaths of Well-Known Residents'. The poster is torn and fragile but a remarkable survival nonetheless. The hoarding is of sturdy construction with the original wire grille fully operational and the enamelled newspaper logo showing only minor wear.
