pp 62 Unpublished manuscript study of the development and construction of the Spritsail Thames sailing barge. Small folio bound in quarter grey buckram over blue cloth, hand-lettered in white to the upper cover. Manuscript title page from July 1955 by 'Leonard A Welch', elegantly written throughout in brown italic ink. A Contents leaf precedes the seven chapters of text and a bibliography. There are ten full page drawings and around a dozen leaves of photographic illustrations, most reproducing published images. Welch deals with the origins of the spritsail boats on the Thames in London: 'Here then was a craft whose development could be attributed solely to the requirements of the commercial trade of the London River.' He describes the design of the barge as essentially set by the eighteenth century and traces its technological evolution through the nineteenth century 'when the swim-head began to give place to the round bow' and into the twentieth with technical analyses of design 'refinements' and 'Stackies', concluding with 'Recent Years'.
