First edition, first state, of perhaps the greatest of all collections of Sherlock Holmes stories which contains The Speckled Band and a Scandal in Bohemia.

Publisher's light blue cloth over heavy bevel-edged boards; blocked and titled in black and gilt, minor fading to blue cloth, rubbing to corners. Front board with street scene vignette stamped in black with no street-sign text. Floral endpapers cracked along inner hinges, not affecting the soundness of the binding; minor spine lean. Light foxing to preliminary leaves including title and occasionally throughout with the called-for misprint of ‘Violent Hunter’ for ‘Violet Hunter’ on page 317 indicating that this is the first state. The text is clean and unmarked with Sidney Paget’s original illustrations present. All edges gilt.

This first volume of Sherlock Holmes stories was published on 14 October 1892 in an edition of 10,000 copies. It was sold out by the beginning of the following year. Paget’s created the visual images which have shaped depictions of Sherlock Holmes ever since and are highly memorable. Green and Gibson A10a
