[ff] 27. Manuscript phrenological analysis of 'Mr Ernest B Nixon' undertaken by a 'Graduate of the American Institute of Phrenology, Fowler Wells and Co., New York.' 'Professor Hatfield' has used his own pre-printed blank notebook to present the analysis. Secured by brass split pins, the booklet has green thick paper printed covers, lower cover detached, the recipient's name in ink on the upper cover which is nicked and torn. The analysis runs to 27 leaves, written on rectos only and analyses character as well as suggesting remedies and appropriate behaviours: 'The nervo-muscular system is well developed, hence you have a high degree of both mental and physical activity. A slow sedentary calling is not in accordance with your temperament... The width of your head in the temples shews that you possess much natural ingenuity...' The manuscript is signed and dated on the final leaf. Hatfield practised out of the Yorkshire seaside town of Bridlington but was trained by the American Institute of Phrenology in New York which traded as the Fowler Wells company and developed a global reputation. A most uncommon survival of the pseudo-science of phrenology.
