Comically inscribed by Heaney with a speech bubble from Sweeney’s head on the title page.

First Faber reprint from 1984 with Heaney’s bubbled inscription: ‘I wonder are the Saunderses coming to Ireland this year again...’ Heaney has signed the head of the title page and written the date ‘October 29 1988’ below the vignette.

Bound in publisher’s black boards, silver spine lettering, small push to top corner of upper cover, very slight toning to paper stock, especially rear endpapers, overall near fine. The jacket is fine.

Heaney inscribed this book for his friend Dennis Saunders who ran poetry conferences for teachers in Kent in the 1950s-1980, inviting Seamus Heaney to several of these events and becoming friends in the course of these convivial times spent together. This is one of several Heaney-inscribed book that we are offering, each with a more affectionate and intimate message from the poet to Dennis and his wife Pam.
