Owned by the art collector and brother of the painter William Rothenstein, Charles Lambert Rutherston, with his bookplate designed by Eric Gill in 1916 at the time of his change of name.

Bound in good-looking green bevel-edged cloth with gilt spine lettering. Eric Gill’s bookplate (8.8x6cm plate mark) appears on the front pastedown with a posthumous presentation label to Bradford Technical College from 1945. Opposite is the library plate of the ‘TCB’ with ‘RCT 49’ in ink indicating that this was the 49th book from Rutherston’s collection that came to the library. Otherwise a very good copy internally, a couple of fingermarks. Provenance: acquired on deaccessioning by a teacher at the College which subsequently became Bradford University.

Rutherston (1872-1945) worked in the family woollen business in Bradford which made him a wealthy man. He collected Chinese and western art, and donated paintings to the National Gallery and the British Museum. He also collected modern paintings, drawings and prints, mostly works by members of the New English Art Club, many of which came to the Manchester Art Gallery in 1925. Gill Engravings P55.
