(8.8x13.7cm) Signed portrait post-card of the founder of the Labour Party, presented sixty years later to the Labour Leader and Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. This card was issued as part of 'The Knight Series... Prominent Politicians' and was signed by Keir Hardie at the tail of the card on the day that he gave two Parliamentary speeches on the The Unemployed Workmen Bill: 'Keir Hardie 13.7.05'. On the verso of the card is inscribed: 'With every good wish for a great campaign and a well-deserved victory - and with great respect from another Scot. Andrew Faulds'. This gift could have been given in any one of the four elections fought by Harold Wilson as leader of the Labour party in 1964, 1966, 1970 and 1974. Faulds was an actor-turned-politician who also fought the elections in 1966, 1970 and 1974; he was sacked by Wilson as Labour's arts spokesman in 1973. Born into humble circumstances Keir Hardie rose to become one of the best known public figures of his time, Member of Parliament, founder of a major political party and an advocate of votes for women. Harold Wilson became Labour's most electorally successful leader and this gift from a Scot in honour of the party's founder has a peculiar resonance. The postcard comes from the private collection of Harold and Mary Wilson which was recently dispersed at auction following the death of Mary Wilson aged 102 in 2016. This postcard was kept safe in the couple's London flat.
