[8] pp 270 [2] First edition, later issue, in a later issue jacket conforming closely to the design of the first but repriced at 4s 6d and with changes to rear flap. The first edition book appears in its lavender cloth binding, light blue lettering to the spine, a little rubbed to edges and slight discolouration, title page printed in black, not red and black as per the first issue. The book is however dated 1939 with no reference to a reprint; on the front pastedown a book label 'From the Collection of David and Patricia Cory' and a small bookplate above on the front pastedown, pencil ownership signature of 'G Branston' above this. The jacket is priced at '4s. 6d. net' on the front flap, old tape repairs to the verso at the head and tail of the spine and similarly at head and tail of the folds to the flaps. Externally the jacket has good colour and shows beautifully with the image of the protagonist taking aim with his sniper rifle. The signature of 'G. Branston' is laid down on the front flap. Household's tale describes an Englishman who stalks an evil dictator - Hitler - but is caught before he can assassinate him, then flees to England to avoid detection. It has been described as 'The best manhunt book in history, expertly paced, tightly plotted and far surpassing John Buchan's more famous 'The Thirty-nine Steps''. That might be going it somewhat but it certainly has a far better jacket design than Buchan's. This book comes from the recently dispersed library of Norfolk-based David and Patricia Cory who amassed their collection of fantasy fiction, ghost stories, crime fiction and classics over several decades. Patricia Cory, who was a published author herself, died last year.
