[12, 72 [lacking pp 67-70]A first edition of the libretto of one of the earliest English operas, first performed at Dorset Garden Theatre in London in February 1675 by the Duke's Company with music by Matthew Locke. The text lacks two leaves (K2,3) and in this version A2r has 'Virtues' in the last line and line 5 of B1r has 'Countrey'. There is a contemporary ownership signature of 'John Pelling' on the title page with a larger signature in his hand blotted out. There is occasional foxing and a closed horizontal tear coming in from the foreedge two thirds of the way down A3 but without loss. Recent marbled wrappers with a printed label on the upper cover. Psyche is regarded as the first English semi-opera to be written from scratch, regarded still as a daring innovation, and helped to establish the genre in Britain. ESTC R202269.
