Bound in contemporary sheep with a blind double fillet panel to the boards and horizontal lines to the spine. Ownership signature in black ink of 'Lo. Wynne at Hazlewood' - probably Owen Wynne 1756-1840 - on front pastedown (no rear pastedown or endpapers present). Ownership signature of William Bison to title page and in similar brown ink occasional annotation throughout text which is collated and complete. The corners of the text block have been diagonally trimmed about half a centimeter in from the corner. Light browning throughout, one half gathering a little pulled. Álvares was a sixteenth century Jesuit Portugese educator whose Latin grammar - Prosodia - was adopted as a standard work with numerous translations. ESTC locates four copies - none in United Kingdom. ESTC N39977.
