The Prime Minister Harold Wilson's 1968 'Phone Book, bespoke crushed olive morocco presentation binding over thick card covers from 'Dowsett Associated Companies' with 'Harold Wilson' in gilt to upper cover, all edges gilt, silk bookmark. Tabbed alphabetical entries. This is very much a book of Labour political contacts, dating from Wilson's years as Prime Minister. The entries, about fifty of them, are written in Wilson's own hand although the book does not have the feel of being heavily used. As a serving Prime Minister Wilson wouldn't have expected to dial numbers himself - this book may have been used privately by the Prime Minister, always fearful about bugging and surveillance, so that he could avoid civil - or secret - service monitoring of his calls. As an example there are five names under 'C which include: 'CASTLE, Barbara 359.2012. Turville heath 464' and 'CALLAGHAN, Jim, 735.9959. Ringwes 572'. All the major figures from the Labour movement are here, including Tony Benn, Lord Goodman, Denis Healey, Joe Haines, Roy Jenkins, Peter Shore, The New Statesman and The Sunday Times.
