Original pen and ink portrait of the French writer Andre Maurois.
Bentley has drawn the portrait on art paper with pencil underdrawing and pen and ink overdrawing and shading, two small tippexed corrections by the artist to the left hand end of the lip and the right eyebrow. Signed in white ink with the subject’s name below the image, concealed by the mount. To the verso the stamp of the Sunday Telegraph newspaper and technical details for publication in pencil. The image measures: 132x146mm.
Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) drew around sixty portraits of public figures for The Sunday Telegraph from 1961 onwards and as well as working for Time and Tide, and the News Chronicle. He wrote novels himself and, most famously, illustrated T S Eliot’s Book of Practical Cats.
