[plate] pp 44 First issue published in 1679 containing Van Leeuwenhoek's ground-breaking account of viewing live spermatozoa under a microscope and other articles and book reviews. Attractively bound with additional end-papers to bulk out the text in twentieth century quarter buckram over paper covered boards; folding frontispiece and text complete as issued, light toning throughout: a scarce item. Van Leeuwenhoek was the world's first microbiologist thanks to the discoveries he made with his microscope which include sperm cells, bacteria, the pattern of muscle fibres and capillaries: a dissected dog's testicle illustrates Van Leeuwenhoek's article here, an image that was engraved specifically for this publication. Other contributions include Monsieur 'Bernier's way of Flying' and 'P Fran Lana's way of making a Flying Chariot'. The Philosophical Collections were published by Hooke following the cessation of the Philosophical Transactions caused by the death of Henry Oldenburg between 1679-1682 when the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society resumed publication.
