pp [24] 306 [40] First Streater edition of Nicholas Culpeper’s translation and reworking of the Royal College of Physicians' Pharmacopoia Londinensis. Soundly, if unbeautifully, bound in half nineteenth century roan over marbled boards, much rubbing to the spine; marbled endpapers and red edges to the text block and nineteenth century endpapers. The text collates complete as per ESTC, browning to the paper stock with a little foxing. Early owership signatures of 'John Lunn and J Joseph Barrowcliff' to the blank preceding the text proper. Either Lunn or Barrowcliff has written a few financial calculations on the final blank. On the second blank, ownership signature of 'M[uriel] Engledow', wife of the agriculturist Sir Frank Leonard Engledow. The pharmacopia was a great success for the Royal College of Physicians from its first publication in 1618 but Culpeper stole a march on them when he published his English translation of 1649 which rendered the Latin names of substances and methods of preparation into a more widely accessible language. A great populariser, Culpeper also included the descriptions of the uses of the different preparations which were omitted from the physicians’ book.
