[v] vi-ix [1] pp 2-502 [folding diagram opposite p 117] [no publisher's catalogue] The second edition with 'fifth thousand' on title page in half tan calf over marbled boards, lightly rubbed. Bookplate of 'WRC' surmounted by a phoenix on the first marbled pastedown; marbled endpapers and book edges; bound without the publisher's advertisements after the text. Otherwise complete and internally fine. An early reader has made two expert pencil annotations, the more interesting one appearing at the beginning of Chapter IV on natural selection referring to a line in one of Darwin's letters to his publisher John Murray: 'Darwin calls this Chapter "the keystone of his work"'. On the Origin of Species is described by Darwin's bibliographer Freeman as 'the most important biological book ever written' and for the collector it has become an essential addition to any serious library of science and human thought. This particular edition is sometimes referred to as the Ilkley edition because Darwin completed most of the corrections incorporated in the text while staying in the Yorkshire spa town of that name in 1859 as he retreated from the world during the weeks following the book's epochal first publication.
