ff56. Preparatory notes for lectures given by a leading British disciple of Maria Montessori's educational movement Claude Claremont, probably in the hand of his wife the historian Francesca Claremont. The Claremonts have used black exercise book, cloth spine, old damp staining which contains summaries of 16 lectures written in blue ink on rectos to be delivered at their Montessori training centre in Surrey. The first nine lectures are devoted to a review, lectures 10-13 cover Elementary Method and the last three are on Arithmetic. The lecture series begins: 'Once upon a time pedagogists were lonely stars in the heavens; now a galaxy! Method based on scientific experiment - in school...' Claude Claremont met Maria Montessori shortly after the Great War and remained within the movement for the rest of his life becoming a 'celebrated teacher in the method both in the United Kingdom and the United States.' Claude Claremont translated at least one of Maria Montessori's works, Montessori Education: The Hope of the Future. Francesca Claremont was not heavily involved with her husband's Montessori work but is understood to have written these lecture notes.
