viii,231 [actually 261];[3] pp 48 An English edition purportedly signed by its author Jeanne de La Motte. Recent half brown calf over marbled boards, bookplate of J Norman Graves, toning to paper stock. De La Motte's signature appears at the foot of page 231, actually p 261 where the printer has indicated for her to sign, effectively as validation of her controversial testimony: 'Comtesse de Valois de La Motte'. ESTC goes no further than stating 'Apparently bearing the signature of the author on p.231 [i.e.261]' although this kind of interpolated signature was not unheard of in books of this period. An adventuress and thief whose family claimed descent from the Valois kings of France, Jeanne de La Motte claimed to be Marie Antoinette's agent in the purchase of a famous necklace originally designed for Madame du Barry and though subsequently imprisoned she escaped to London where these memoirs were published.
