[28] pp853 [23] Lytton Strachey's copy of Commines's memoir of fifteenth century France. Early limp vellum binding with the title and author to the spine in a later hand. Lytton Strachey's book label designed by Dora Carrington (in its smallest version) appears on the front paste-down with the book label of the prolific Lancashire collector Robert Hayhurst opposite. Printer's device to the title page, text unmarked and complete as called for with three finely worked copper engraved portraits of Louis XI, Charles Duke of Burgundy and the author that follow the introduction. These 'memoires' are now seen as a major resource for understanding fifteenth century Europe. Strachey was a serious book collector and Dora Carrington wrote of this bookplate in her diary 'As I stuck the book plates in with Lytton I suddenly thought of Sothebys and the book plates in some books I had looked at, when Lytton was bidding for a book and I thought: These books will one day be looked at by those gloomy faced booksellers and buyers. And suddenly a premonition of a day when these labels will no longer [be] in this library came over me' (March 20 1931). Robert Hayhurst's library is in the process of being dispersed at a series of auctions at Morphet's of Harrogate.
