The Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch’s copies with six bookplates of the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, tutor to Adam Smith, and twelve armorial stamps for his wife Elizabeth Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch.

The six volumes are uniformly bound in late eighteenth century speckled calf with the remnants of gilt floral decoration to the spine compartments, all labels now vanished. Elizabeth Scott’s ‘EB’ monogram surmounted by a ducal coronet appears twelve times in the centre of each of the boards. Faults noted: Volume I upper hinge tender. Volume III lacking first blank endpaper; Vol IV lacking first blank endpaper; Volume V upper board detached; Vol VI upper hinge tender.

Each volume has the Duke of Buccleuch’s bookplate on the first pastedown with the separate smaller plate for noting ‘Case’ and ‘Shelf’ pasted partly over the top of the bookplate. There are no references to case or shelfmarks written on these plates but several pencilled annotations adjacent that may be fulfilling this function. It’s not known which of the Buccleuch house libraries these books come from though Boughton in Northamptonshire seems quite likely as it was this home that Elizabeth Montagu brought to her husband Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. It was described by Chips Channon as ‘a dream house with a strange, sleepy quality, but its richness, its beauty and possessions are stupefying. Everything belonged to Charles I, or Marie de Medici, or was given by Louis XIV to the Duke of Monmouth... The long view from the terrace here is like a Claude Lorrain... But it is the stillness, the curious quiet of Boughton that impresses the most.’
