Autobiography of the potter May Davis, and her life in Africa, Patagonia, Cornwall, New Zealand and Peru. Inscribed by the author and daughter of the journalist C P Scott: 'May B Davis - to Harry [Horlock Stringer] - a very old and dear friend'. With colour photograph of May Davis tipped onto verso of front cover, and tipped onto rear cover: 'Christmas greetings from New Zealand' on May's pretty hand-made paper. Note laid in from Elizabeth, possible Bernard Leach's daughter. The front cover drawing is of the author by Bernard Leach. A near fine copy, blind ownership stamp of Harry Horlock Stringer on title page. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad.
