First edition in a striking art deco style dustjacket by 'L Houghton' of a work translated by Hamish Miles. Light green publisher's cloth with lettering, no ownership signatures, spotting to edge of text block - about very good, in good jacket, not price-clipped, chipped to head and tail of spine with old tape repairs to verso; most uncommon thus. Aveline (1901-1992) was the pen name of Evgen Avtsine who worked as a writer, editor, publisher and poet who became a protege of Anatole France and a close friend of the film maker Jean Vigo. This novel has as its protagonist 'a masterful and fascinating woman, passing reluctantly from her youth'.
