61 separate imprints regarding lichen bound together, presumably by their author and preceded by a manuscript list of contents and a further 'List of other Lichenological Contributions. (no copies received).'

Bound in half calf over marbled boards; rubbed and worn but sound, with a manuscript title page and a further eight page list of imprints present - and those absent presumed to be in Crombie's hand. Preceding the bound offprints and extracts is a 24 page printed list of 'Testimonials in Favour of the Rev. James M. Crombie.... Candidate for the Chair of Botany in the University of Glasgow' which includes praise for his work as an 'active and accomplished Lichenologist' from Joseph Hooker at Kew. Despite the high praise for his activities Crombie did not secure the chair.

The individual imprints are in a variety of formats and from many different publications including the Linnean Society, Journal of Botany, Grevilliea, some with coloured plates and in one case dealing with specimens provided to Crombie by Hooker. The imprints are usually dated in ink by Crombie on the first leaf, and bear a handful of minor emendations.

Crombie is regarded as the father of British lichen studies, and gave his name to the standard lichen name abbreviation. He became a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1869 and commenced publishing these papers the following year.
