xxiv, [1] pp 2-503 [1] [28] Index [folding table opposite page 115] The first English edition of Rousseau's Letters on the Elements of Botany comprising eight translated letters by the philosopher followed by twenty four written by the translator and Cambridge Professor of Botany, Thomas Martyn. This example is bound in half calf over marbled boards. The binding is worn with scuffing to the boards and tender hinges. A heraldic bookplate is on the front pastedown; the text and engraved table are clean and complete. Martyn's translation and expansion of Rousseau was highly successful and went through a series of reprints over the next few decades. Apparently a lady should be able to identify plants herself!
