xx, pp 1-556 A First Edition of the first collected edition of Flora Thompson's classic account of Victorian village life. This First Edition is in the original richly-coloured red cloth binding; the text is clean throughout, no ownership inscriptions, and overall the book is in very good condition. The Dustjacket which is frequently lacking displays a beautiful wood engraved design by Julie Neild. It has been printed on very thin paper as a result of wartime paper shortages with resultant browning and has been partially rebacked on the back - the verso - with tissue paper at some time in the past. Overall the jacket is in fair condition, not price-clipped. Set in rural Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, Thompson drew on her own memories of the hamlet where she spent her childhood forty years earlier. As Richard Mabey puts it, the unique strength of the work comes from Thompson's ability to chronicle the moment 'when the quiet, close-knit and peaceful rural culture, governed by the seasons, began a transformation, through agricultural mechanisation, better communications and urban expansion, into the homogenised society of today.'
