[pp] 70 Todmorden's register of canal boat inspections for the early years of the twentieth century. Large folio pre-printed book produced in Birmingham, worn quarter roan over burgundy cloth covered boards for use in association with the 1884 Canal Boats Act. Card of the presumed inspector 'Wellington Albert M'Grath' tipped onto the first blank, his role given to be 'Manager of the Rochdale Canal Co.' M'Grath recorded his inspections over a series of columns provided which require the date, place of canal boat's registration, number, owner's name, Master's name followed by a sequence of columns detailing the boat, its accommodation, state of repair and a column for 'Was any Infectious Disease on board.' In the final comments column are notes such as 'Captains Wife and 3 children. (5. 2 3/4. 1/4 yrs) Leakage into sleeping berths of both cabins.' And 'Pail for use of horses used for carrying water. No certificate on board. Said to have left dock unfinished last week.' A superb document of social history. Annually the inspections were signed off by 'Owen J Llewellyn'.
