pp 20 The birth certificate of modern India and Pakistan, which came into force a month after publication on 15th August 1947 with the creation of the two new Dominion states. Printed by the Stationery Office and stapled (rusty) along the spine on large octavo sized paper with a single leaf setting out the 'Arrangement of Sections' which precedes the coat of arms and the Act proper which divided British India into two new and fully sovereign dominions of India and Pakistan. The Act also divided Bengal and Punjab between the two new countries, ceded legislative authority to their respective Constituent Assemblies and abolished the use of the title 'Emperor of India' by the British monarch. This act was the culmination of the struggle for freedom and self-determination on the sub-continent led by figures such as Gandhi and Nehru through the first half of the twentieth century.
