pp 206 First English translation from 1959 by Stuart Woolf, printed in Italy for the Orion Press but distributed by Andre Deutsch. Blue cloth binding, darkened at the head and tail of the spine where the jacket has worn; 1960 ownership signature on the first pastedown otherwise near fine internally. A blue stamp below the imprint on the verso of the title page records that the book was 'Printed in Italy by Tianti, Florence' The jacket is in good condition only with loss to the top and bottom of the spine and nicked and chipped elsewhere. This first edition is scarce in commerce. Levi's narrative records in chillingly matter-of-fact prose how in 1943 he was arrested by Italian fascists and deported from his native Turin to Auschwitz - of the 650 Italian Jews in his shipment, Levi was one of only twenty who left the camps alive. Already the jacket blurb refers to the work as 'a classic of this literature' and 'an authentic and passionate human document' with a 'complete absence of artifice'.
