[72] pp 168, pp 70; pp 171-194. Herbert's most significant prose collection, two volumes from 1652 and 1651 bound in one, the second containing proverbs. Nineteenth century half roan leather over marbled boards with black morocco lettering piece to spine, a little rubbed but very good - an attractive binding. The text is collated and complete, very clean for a mid-seventeenth century volume, with the erratic pagination to the Proverbs as called for; no front paste-down inside the upper cover. In this late volume, the most significant of Herbert’s prose writings, he offers a work on priestly conduct, writing of the 'model church man and the fundamental principles of faith, human relations, and religious rhetoric'.
