THE MOST HANDSOME, THE MOST INFLUENTIAL of Robert Estienne’s four editions of the New Testament. Seventeenth century English calf, re-backed, raised bands and a red morocco label, boards recornered. Printer’s woodcut device to title page; closed tear across head of page, old paper repair to verso, some wrinkling to the page. 3 early nineteenth century ownership signatures including ‘H S Boyd 1807’. Numerous woodcut initials and decorative section dividers; early nineteenth century annotation ‘Instances of Sublimity in N.T.’ to verso of final leaf. [pp] 30 (lacking first blank), pp272; pp202, pp [2]

Printed in a magnificent Greek font designed by Garamond and in a large folio format, this was the earliest published Greek New Testament to boast a textual apparatus and its text was reprinted for two centuries after. In preparation for this edition Estienne’s son had examined the available manuscript evidence and his variant readings are recorded in the margins thereby infuriating the hierarchy of the French church by revealing the variability of scriptural text. This edition became the standard text used to collate Greek New Testament manuscripts but its Parisian reception forced Estienne to relocate to Geneva. ($6000)
