Superb Roosevelt family association copy, first gifted by FDR's proud mother Sara, heavily annotated by her brother Frederic A Delano and containing signed material by Eleanor Roosevelt including an inscribed photograph of Hyde Park and a long letter from Frederic A Delano laid in. This is a book with a complex and highly rewarding provenance that ultimately formed part of the FDR collection of the Director of the Morgan Library and son of one of FDR's cousins, Frederick B Adams. The book which was the first full length publication about Roosevelt started as a gift from Sara Delano Roosevelt to her brother with her inscription on the first blank: 'Fred from sister SDR'. Frederic A Delano's bookplate appears opposite and below Sara's inscription there is a Christmas card of Roosevelt as Governor of New York sent to Frederic A Delano and inscribed by Eleanor Roosevelt under the printed dedication: 'ER & FDR'. Overleaf is an original photograph of the family mansion once again inscribed by Eleanor Roosevelt: 'Love and every good wish to you both from Hyde Park'. A remarkable typed letter from Fred Delano to 'Laura' is laid in. Dating from September 10th, 1932, Delano exhorts his family to support FDR as 'a candidate for the highest office in the gift of the people... Franklin has been in the fierce glare of public life for 25 years. In that time he has inevitably made some mistakes... but, after honest and fair consideration, I feel that he is a man I am proud to own as a relative and I hope you, too, will feel that way and will support him.' Additionally Frederic Delano has systematically annotated the book about his nephew's politics in pencil with a system of marginal lines, occasional inserts and commentary such as 'good', '?', 'a non sequitur' and, in response to a Roosevelt speech of 1930 about the fear of starvation: 'It is never the less true that a man receives about in food...' A remarkable association copy of the first published book about Roosevelt whose chequered history took it to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection compiled by Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 – 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R. In 1969 he married his third wife, a Swiss princess, with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to Europe explains the recent sale of his books in the United Kingdom.
