pp 494; pp 32 adverts. A most interesting copy of Jennings' memoir of walking in Surrey and Sussex which has been annotated by the owner in the light of a letter, laid into the book, from 1881 sent by the former New York Times editor and author, Louis Jennings, from his English address: 'Kingston Manor House, Lewes'. In the three page letter Jennings addresses his correspondent's interest in the locations that inspired this book, saying that 'It would give me great pleasure to fill in the dates of the various walks I have described in my books, but I have destroyed all the notes which I made on my way, and have no means of recovering the correct dates.' The rest of the letter then contradicts this assertion with increasingly accurate dates for the individual walks including the 'walk from Rye to Hastings' and the unexpected memory that 'I have some idea that I wrote the dates in my copies of Mr Murray's Handbooks, but cannot at present lay my hands upon them'. The letter is signed 'L.J. Jennings'. The book is bound in publisher's green decorative cloth with black and gilt decoration, rubbed to extremities. The brown endpapers have been replaced. The book is lightly annotated in pencil throughout, sometimes adding to Jennings' information, sometimes contradicting it as when a 'fair night's lodging' is described as 'poor'. Jennings was an English journalist and politician who edited the New York Times between 1870 and 1876 but returned to London after failing to gain financial control of the Times. He had a close working relationship with the publisher John Murray.
