'I first had serious doubts about F. Christmas when I was about five and my mother took me to visit him in Selfridges...' A funny Christmas-themed two page squib written in black ink on foolscap paper by John Mortimer with a 'Turville Heath Cottage' note card from the author presenting it in 2004 for a charity auction; old folds. In the article which is undated but probably dates from a few years earlier, Mortimer considers his childhood doubts about Father Christmas as beginning when he encountered several purported Fathers Christmas in the course of a single afternoon in the west end of London but subsequently overcoming his scepticism: 'In spite of this when I was married and entrusted with many children, we kept up the ritual of the glass of sherry by the chimney and the stockings and pillow cases which had to be filled up out of my earnings...' concluding that the belief in Santa Claus 'however temporary or difficult to maintain is a necessity of childhood...' Though clearly written for publication we can't locate the occasion of the manuscript's publication or an exact date.
