Author-inscribed on the first blank in the midst of war: 'Margery Vesper, cordially, and to commemorate at least one day of play, if not another. H E Bates 1/44'. A first edition of the writer's first big commercial success, bound in publisher's brown cloth, very good in a very good jacket showing excellent colour, price-clipped, slight spine lean with a little rubbing to edges. During the second world war Bates was commissioned by the intelligence branch of the Air Ministry to write stories about the men of the air force which led to the Flying Office X books and in 1944 this novel which has long since transcended the circumstances of its inspiration.
