Autograph letter from the novelist and social activist Upton Sinclair to 'My dear President Roosevelt' written on Hotel Algonquin, New York, headed paper in September 1933. In his one page letter Sinclair requests a meeting with Roosevelt 'about Oct 12. I have registered in Calif as a Democrat, & plan to contest at the primaries the nomination for Governor, upon a program of "end poverty in Calif." After pleasantries Sinclair concludes the letter 'Would that be possible? Sincerely Upton Sinclair'. The author did indeed run for governor on his utopian platform, eventually losing to Frank Merriam; he also met with President Roosevelt though received little enough support in his campaign. The letter is housed within a bespoke card folder with typed lettering piece to the upper cover and a certificate stating that it was legally exported from France. This letter comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection compiled by Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 – 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R. In 1969 he married his third wife, a Swiss princess, with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. Adams' move to Europe explains the recent sale of his books in the United Kingdom.
