Three inscribed supper menus for Winston Churchill's Parliamentary Private Secretary, Frederick Whyte, MP for Perth from 1910-1918, later the first President of the Central Legislative Assembly of British India. From the estate of Whyte's friend A F Giles (and Edinburgh University contemporary) the first menu is the most lavish, being held at the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh on 2nd February 1910 to celebrate Whyte's election as a Liberal MP in the previous month. Complete with a portrait roundel, Giles is slated to give the last of three supporting speeches in the printed menu and has recorded by hand the additional speeches given the same evening which included a mocking "Votes for Women" by H M Miller, sub-titled 'Daughters of the horse-leech crying 'give give'" - there were actually women in attendance! On the lower cover all the attendees have signed the menus including Whyte himself who has written: 'A.F.Whyte MP.' annotated in pencil by Giles 'and to the owner of this card many others and better things'. Subsequent menus date from 28 March, 1912 with an additional sheet of manuscript bon-mots or 'Postprandial Gobbets' culled from the evening's events and finally 2nd March, 1916. Whyte supported Churchill while he was Home Secretary and subsequently as first Lord of the Admiralty.
