[8x5cm] Collection of 1950s vintage photos of Operation Jubilee, the disastrous Dieppe raid in August 1942. 14 photographs of the raid are housed in a small '50s style photo album with a Gent bookseller's label alongside a further 33 tourist images of Gent itself. Among the Dieppe images are several of the canonical photographs by which the raid has come to be known, showing British and Canadian prisoners being marched along the streets of the town, beached landing craft and bodies strewn across the sand. Beyond the fact that the owner of the photographs, Philip Foster of Wakefield was himself a World War II veteran (deceased) and assiduous collector (see the Leonard Cheshire inscribed photograph above) no more is known of the images' provenance but they are unlikely to be any later than 1960. One additional image shows a young soldier washing potatoes - this may show the young Foster himself although details of his military service are unclear.
