Heaney’s first regularly published book inscribed on the title page for a friend in the late 1960s.

First edition in fine publisher’s green cloth with gilt spine letters, a little dustiness to the top edge. Inscribed by the author in black biro to the title page below his printed name which is crossed through: ‘Seamus Heaney 19th March 1969.’ A little spotting to the first blank and the foreedge only. Overall a near fine copy in a very good jacket. Not price-clipped, rubbing at the head and tail of the spine and the usual fading to the pink lower half of the spine an a centimeter of the pink panel of the jacket. Toning and spotting to the white printed lower panel of the jacket.

Although it was preceded by his Eleven Poems this collection effectively launched Heaney’s career and marks an important moment in modern Irish poetry, as well as winning the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Heaney inscribed the book for his friend Dennis Saunders who ran poetry conferences for teachers in Kent in the 1960s-1980s, inviting Seamus Heaney to several of his events and becoming friends in the course of these convivial weekends spent together. This is one of several Heaney-inscribed book that we are offering, each with a more affectionate and intimate message from the poet to Dennis and his wife Pam.
