A letter from Robert Burns's son James Glencairn Burns mounted on the final leaf of this mid-century edition of his father's works. The book is bound in battered half calf over cloth boards, upper cover detached; lower calf secure by tape to the inner hinge, many detached pages. This book's many shortcomings are redeemed by a two page 1859 letter written by Lieutenant Colonel J G Burns, Robert Burns's third legitimate child to survive into adulthood. Writing from his home in Cheltenham on paper embossed with his initials, Burns addresses 'Gentlemen' in a letter apparently intended to deal with an intrusive request for money: 'on reaching home on Tuesday night I found a number of letters of various date from Mr Armour[?] I enclose a P.O. for two Pounds from my Brother and my self which oblige us by handing to him, with this intination that no attention will be paid to any further application...' Burns signs himself overleaf 'J.G.Burns' and appears to name the addressee as ' W.J.B. Marley' William Armour has countersigned the recto of the second leaf 'Received with many thanks'. It's hard not to speculate that the involvement of both sons points to some family business that may well implicate their illustrious father.
