From the library of science fiction writer Brian Aldiss, with the novelist's notes and annotations preparatory to a 1966 BBC discussion of Forster's The Machine Stops - a story which has achieved new prominence during the pandemic.

Near fine 1965 reissue of Forster's short stories in near fine jacket. Aldiss's ownership signature on front free endpaper; receipt for purchase of the book from an Oxford bookseller laid in. Aldiss has annotated The Machine Stops with a system of marginal single and double lines. Offsetting to the first page of the story from a folded piece of brown paper which carries Aldiss's typed notes on the story, 'Kuno objects to speaking to Mother through Machine... The terror of direct experience: lure of tenth hand ideas...' Small index card with further Aldiss notes in his hand 'Modern morality... Kuno's Faust?'; 4 page typed running order on yellow paper for the BBC's Late Night Line Up, 6th October 1966, in which Aldiss discussed the adaptation of Forster's story by Clive Donner and Kenneth Cavander. Additionally a manuscript note about arrangements for the programme which was hosted by Denis Touhy with the actor Yvonne Mitchell appearing alongside Aldiss.

Brian Aldiss was one of Britain's most distinguished and versatile writers of speculative fiction who died in 2017.
