Extensive artist's archive depicting the African landscapes and photo-montage dustjackets that adorned Joy Adamson's hugely successful trilogy about her life with lions: Born Free, Living Free and Forever Free. Kenneth Farnhill was a prolific jacket designer for the publisher Collins, creating many of Agatha Christie's later dustjackets. This collection of the three books in Farnhill's own copies and the sequence of versions and revisions of the book designs reveal the artist working through and developing his ideas: they show the painstaking work that went into delivering the designs for the decorative boards of Adamson's books with their African landscapes made up of a montage of pen and ink and acetate ovelays. And to the modern eye it is these that convey with pleasing immediacy the freshness of Adamson's writing.

Born Free: 1. Pen and ink design for boards of book with acetate overlay of depicting grasses, laid down on Winsor and Newton board, with coloured version of the design stapled to board together with colour swatch. 2. 1960 first edition of Born Free in jacket.

Living Free (the most extensive of the collections) 1. Early version of cover design experimenting with medium and lion heads 2. Jacket design for lettering with colour swatches and Collins commentary to verso. 3. Tracing paper marked-up overlay for jacket design 4. Cover design in pen and ink on Whatman board with three acetate overlays for undergrowth and lion profiles. 5. Two tissue papers with colour swatches for jacket 6. Jacket design with cut out photographic overlays, dimensions and instructions for positioning of sub-title. 7. Marked-up photograph for use on front panel of jacket and second photo for rear panel of jacket with pencilled lines and the instruction 'soften around down these horizontal lines'. 8 Living Free, first edition in jacket, signed by Joy Adamson on title page

For Ever Free: 1. Pen on paper design for illustrated boards with acetate overlay of the superimposed paths. 2 Mock-up for dustjacket lettering with manuscript instructions and overleaf Collins instruction grid dated to 31/7/62 and note '1 out of 3 Colour line and tone... 80 Proofs in Colour on Art Paper' 3.
